Kantha is the most popular form of embroidery in West Bengal and has been around for more than 500 years. It is traditionally done on silk or cotton. Kantha, which means ‘throat’, is associated with Lord Shiva. Initially, the fabrics depicted birds, animals, folk scenes, fish, and imagery illustrated various perspectives on life for Bengalis. Kantha work is used to make multiple objects, including sarees, bed cushions, kurtas, and dupattas, all of which are simple to maintain. Kantha work outfits are famous because of the rich cultural show and elegance they provide. Traditionally, the Kantha work and embroidery was done on soft dhotis and sarees, but eventually, it became popular to be used on a host of other fabrics.
